Abstract

This paper was aimed at exploring firm capabilities in wood and metal manufacturing SMEs in Eritrea. The paper employed a case study research strategy with four wood and metal manufacturing firms. In-depth interview was used to collect the data from each case. The data was analysed using pattern matching where the concepts were catrgirised into themes. A cross-case analysis was also coducted to determine whether there was consistency among the results of the individual cases. Results revealed five organizational capabilities dimensions including employees' technical skill, owner-managers' innovetiveness, personal relationships, formal education, and industry-specific experience linked to the firms' performance. The paper adds knowledge to the theoretical debate by exploring the dimensions of firm capabilities in SMEs in Eritrea, from a developing country context.
