Evaluating the role of urban graphics in promoting social interactions in public spaces

Abstract


Urban art is an effective and precious instrument that plays a vital role in the quality of public places. Artistic elements in urban space can provide the field for the presence or absence of citizens in urban spaces. In this regard, the present study was conducted to examine the role of urban graphics in case of promoting social interactions in public spaces. In this research, descriptive-analytical methodology besides texts, references, and visual documents within library studies was used; in addition, case study and observation methods were employed using field study and questionnaire. Moreover, PLS and SPSS Software were used to calculate and analyze factor loads, intensity and coefficient of correlation between criteria and sub-criteria. According to research results, conceptual aspects of urban graphics with an approach to increase social interactions in urban spaces can be presented in the framework of 4 systems including form, social factors, conceptual factors, environmental factors classifying to 25 criteria and sub-criteria. Research findings indicated that indicator of artistic fountains among physical factors (load value of 0.87), indicator of public places and galleries among social factors (load value of 0.94), cultural values of place among conceptual factors (load value of 0.87), and urban furniture (artistic) among environmental factors (load value of 0.79) had the highest effect on their criteria. Moreover, the measurement model of the study indicated intensity and coefficient correlation between physical and social factors with a load value of 0.89 were higher than other criteria in 15 Khordad Street, Tehran, Iran.
