Abstract

Developing countries face increased burden of communicable diseases because of inadequate sanitary conditions andpoor hygiene practices.Hygiene is a habit that needs to be focused on and inculcated in children at an early age.School is the place where the child can be educated regarding important aspects of hygiene, environment and sanitation.Hence this study is undertaken to find the knowledge, attitude and practices on hygiene among school children in Mangalore city with the objectives to know the existing knowledge of school children on hygiene, to assess the attitude on hygiene of school children and to explore the   practices of hygiene among school children. Survey method and questionnaire was the tool used for the study. A sample of 60 children in the age range of 10-12 years was taken for the study.The major findings of the study revealed that the level of knowledge on general hygiene was moderate. The level of knowledge on personal hygiene, environmental hygiene,water hygiene,food hygiene and oral hygiene was moderate.The level of attitude on general hygiene was good.The level of attitude on personal hygiene, water hygiene,food hygiene and oral hygiene was moderate whereas it was poor on environmental hygiene. The level of practices on personal hygiene, environmental hygiene, food hygiene, water hygiene and oral hygiene were adequate.School children could still be   improved on their knowledge, attitude and practices of hygiene through educating them in this field.
