Abstract


Abstract

Metal concentration ( Fe, Pb, Cr and Zn) were determined in soil and cassava plant(Manihot esculenta) collected from Iron ore mining zone and adjacent residential areas of Kogi State – Nigeria using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer with air acetylene flame . The results obtained across the five sampled areas on the average showed the following concentrations Fe ( 159.6 mg/kg), Pb (3.38mg/kg), Cr ( 2.85mg/kg) and Zn ( 79.85mg/kg) in the soil . The level of absorption of these metals by cassava plant was highest at the mining site and a significant difference was observed as proximity to the mining zone varies . The result indicated that the metals level in the soil did not exceed the WHO and FEPA criteria for agricultural soil.
