After the failure of all rural development programmes in India since Independance, the Central Government decided to pass the employment gurantee act in the year 2004.  In 2005 the act has been converted in National Rural Employment Guaantee Programme and implemented in 200 districts of India.  Out of these 200 districts Ariyalur is one of the district in Tamil Nadu. The aim of the paper is how far this programme benefitted the people registered under this programme.  Hence, the programme is evaluated in the selected villages of Ariyalur District.
